About Our Practice

Founded on the principle that architectural heritage belongs to everyone, we work to make conservation knowledge accessible and actionable.

Our Foundation

The practice emerged from years of fieldwork across Europe, documenting architectural styles from Romanesque churches in rural France to Art Nouveau apartments in Brussels. What began as academic research evolved into something more urgent: a recognition that many property owners lacked access to reliable guidance on caring for historically significant buildings.

Too often, well-intentioned restoration projects inadvertently damaged the very features that made buildings architecturally significant. Replacing handmade clay tiles with concrete substitutes. Covering stone walls with cement render. Installing inappropriate windows that disrupted carefully composed facades.

We established this consultancy to bridge the gap between academic architectural history and practical conservation needs. Our approach emphasises education alongside assessment, ensuring clients understand not just what should be done, but why it matters.

Our Approach

Research-Based Methodology

Every consultation begins with thorough investigation. We examine building records, historical maps, period construction manuals, and comparable structures to establish an accurate understanding of original design intent and subsequent modifications.

Material Authenticity

Traditional materials often outperform modern substitutes in historic buildings. We advocate for lime mortars over cement, breathable paints over plastic coatings, and traditional joinery techniques over contemporary shortcuts—not from nostalgia, but from evidence of superior long-term performance.

Contextual Sensitivity

Architectural styles never existed in isolation. They reflected prevailing tastes, available technologies, economic conditions, and social structures. Understanding this context informs better conservation decisions that honour both the building and its cultural significance.

Sustainable Conservation

The greenest building is often the one already standing. Preserving existing structures reduces embodied carbon, maintains urban character, and sustains craft traditions. We help clients enhance thermal performance and modernise services while respecting architectural integrity.

Areas of Expertise

Our consultancy covers the full spectrum of European architectural styles from medieval to modern. While we maintain broad historical knowledge, our particular strengths lie in Gothic and Renaissance architecture, Victorian and Edwardian domestic buildings, and early 20th-century structures including Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements.

We regularly work with listed buildings, conservation areas, and properties within UNESCO World Heritage sites. Our assessments meet the rigorous documentation standards required for heritage grants, planning applications, and charitable trust oversight.

Beyond individual buildings, we provide neighbourhood-scale analysis, identifying architectural character areas and developing design guidelines that allow appropriate contemporary development while preserving historic context.

Our Commitment

We believe architectural heritage consultation should be collaborative rather than prescriptive. Property owners know their buildings intimately—how they age through seasons, where water penetrates, which rooms remain cold. This experiential knowledge, combined with our historical and technical expertise, produces the most effective conservation strategies.

Our role is to provide informed perspective, identify risks and opportunities, and present options with clear explanations of likely outcomes. The decisions ultimately rest with those responsible for the buildings' care.

We maintain independence from contractors and suppliers, ensuring our recommendations serve conservation priorities rather than commercial interests. When specialist craftspeople or materials are needed, we can suggest qualified sources, but we never receive commissions or referral fees.
